OnLive Gaming Service Goes Live For Android!

The moment every Android gamer was waiting for has finally arrived! OnLive gaming service just got released for Android tablets and some phones. This means that you can start to stream and play console games like L.A. Noire, Batman: Arkham City, Borderlands, Dirt 3, Assassin’s Creed Revelations directly on your tablet or smartphone.

What? Are you asking how do you play? Well, OnLive Mobile allows you to play with full touch controls like every other Android game or you can buy an OnLive gamepad and play games wirelessly. The best thing you can do is plug your device to any HDTV and play awesome games with the gamepad and enjoy your portable, full gaming console. Wow.

Now to the technical part: OnLive works with your internet connection, it gives you the impression that the game is actually running on your device, but it isn’t. OnLive uses powerful servers which run the game for you, doing all the hard work, and they send the rendered frames to your device over the internet. Obviously, your controls are also received by the servers and interact with the game. The games, savefiles and gamer profile are stored in the cloud, this means that OnLive will not take any space for the games you have in your account. You have two choices to play full games: either buy the game or just rent the game for a limited time, obviously the latter costs much less. And more, you can play multiplayer games in cross-platform with PCs, tablets and smartphones.

It’s simple as it seems, you just run the OnLive app on your device and start playing every game you want. Since I’m in Europe, I found that OnLive doesn’t run very well on my PC (yes, this service also works on PC and Mac), so I hope they will improve the service in the future.

OnLive is compatible with all Honeycomb\ICS tablets and some Gingerbread devices:

  • Acer Iconia Tab A500;
  • ASUS Eee Pad Transformer;
  • HTC Evo View;
  • HTC Flyer;
  • HTC Jetstream;
  • HTC EVO;
  • HTC Nexus One;
  • HTC Rezound 4G;
  • HTC Sensation;
  • HTC Sensation XL;
  • Motorola Xoom;
  • Motorola Droid 2;
  • Motorola Droid X2;
  • Motorola DROID BIONIC 4G;
  • Motorola DROID RAZR 4G;
  • Motorola Photon 4G;
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab;
  • Samsung Galaxy S II 4G;
  • Sony Tablet S;
  • Toshiba Thrive;
It’s weird that the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S II is not compatible, however I sent an email to them. They say that OnLive will continue to update these lists as additional smartphones and tablets are tested. So we can expect all others Android phones to be added soon.
As I said before, there is the support for the gamepad, that’s actually the Universal OnLive Wireless Controller which should be working without issues with nearly all the newest devices.
